The most recent and one of the most exciting projects HAWP has embarked upon is the establishment of a Women’s Center in Kabul, which currently is our primary focus. The Women’s Center, which is leased (with the rent paid by an anonymous donor for one year), was furnished by U.S. Protection and Investigations, Barbara Spier’s company, with generators, furniture, household items, curtains, etc. The women students are provided one meal per day and HAWP has hired teachers who are educating the women in Dari, English, sewing, crafts, jewelry-making, rug-making and eventually computer skills to help them become self-supportive. The women in our classes at the Women’s Center are extremely poor and have never been to school. Currently, they are sitting on the floor, but HAWP soon will be providing desks and tables for their use. The clothing and crafts items will be marketed locally and eventually on the Internet.
